Job Summary
The Registered Nurse (RN) – Labor and Delivery provides comprehensive nursing care to women during labor, delivery, recovery, and the immediate postpartum period. This role is responsible for assessing maternal and fetal well-being, monitoring labor progression, administering treatments and medications, assisting with obstetrical procedures, and providing education and emotional support to patients and families throughout the childbirth experience.
The ideal candidate has strong clinical assessment skills, expertise in fetal monitoring, and the ability to respond quickly to changing maternal and neonatal conditions in a fast-paced acute care environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Maternal & Fetal Assessment
- Perform comprehensive assessments of laboring patients and evaluate maternal and fetal status.
- Monitor fetal heart rate patterns, uterine contractions, and labor progression.
- Recognize and respond to changes in maternal or fetal condition.
- Assess and manage high-risk obstetrical patients as appropriate.
- Document assessments, interventions, and patient outcomes accurately.
- Labor & Delivery Care
- Provide direct nursing care throughout all stages of labor and delivery.
- Assist with inductions, augmentations, vaginal deliveries, and cesarean section procedures.
- Administer medications, IV fluids, blood products, and treatments as prescribed.
- Support pain management interventions, including epidural and spinal anesthesia monitoring.
- Assist physicians, midwives, and anesthesia providers during obstetrical procedures.
- Postpartum & Newborn Care
- Monitor maternal recovery during the immediate postpartum period.
- Assess newborn adaptation and provide initial newborn care.
- Support breastfeeding initiation and maternal-newborn bonding.
- Monitor for postpartum complications and initiate interventions as needed.
- Ensure safe transition of care to postpartum and nursery teams.
Patient & Family Education
Educate patients and families regarding:
- Labor and delivery processes
- Pain management options
- Newborn care
- Breastfeeding
- Postpartum recovery
- Discharge instructions
- Provide emotional support and advocacy throughout the birthing experience.
- Promote family-centered care and patient satisfaction.
- Care Coordination & Collaboration
Collaborate with:
- Obstetricians
- Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialists
- Midwives
- Neonatologists
- Anesthesiologists
- Lactation Consultants
- Nursing Staff
- Participate in interdisciplinary care planning and patient handoffs.
- Coordinate admissions, transfers, and discharge activities.
- Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
- Ensure compliance with hospital policies, state regulations, and nursing standards.
- Adhere to infection prevention, patient safety, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Participate in departmental audits, education, and competency programs.
Required Qualifications
- Graduate of an accredited Nursing program.
- Current and unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license.
- Previous acute care nursing experience.
- Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills.
- Ability to function effectively in a high-acuity, fast-paced environment.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency with Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
- Previous Labor & Delivery experience.
- Experience with high-risk obstetrics and fetal monitoring.
- Experience in Women's Health, Postpartum, Mother-Baby, NICU, or Obstetrical Nursing.
- Knowledge of evidence-based maternal and neonatal care practices.
Certifications
- Current RN License – Required
- Basic Life Support (BLS) – Required
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) – Required/Preferred per facility
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) – Required
- AWHONN Intermediate or Advanced Fetal Monitoring Certification – Preferred
- Inpatient Obstetric Nursing Certification (RNC-OB) – Preferred
