JOB SUMMARY
Provide first assist services during cardiovascular surgical procedures, ensuring a high standard of patient care and supporting the surgical team.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as the primary surgical assistant during cardiovascular surgery.
- Actively assist the surgeon with tasks including tissue handling, exposure, hemostasis, and incision closure.
- Maintain a sterile field throughout surgical procedures.
- Anticipate the surgeon's needs during operations.
- Assist with room turnover to optimize surgical case flow.
- Cannulate when going on and coming off bypass.
- Pass cannulation suture as needed.
- Suture as directed by surgeons.
Schedule / Shift
- Days, 6:30 AM - 5:00 PM
- 4x10-hour shifts per week
- Holidays and call required
- Option for block scheduling
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of 2 years of surgical assisting experience.
- Must hold a First Assist certification.
- Must hold one of the following:
- Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) certification
- RN license
- If not holding a CST certification, candidates must provide evidence of employment practicing surgical technology in a healthcare facility before July 1, 2009 OR possess a Certified Surgical Assistant certification.
- Current BLS certification Required.
- Strong cardiac skills.
- Must not be a surgeon or physician from another country.
Experience
- 2 years of required experience.
Skills
- Proficient in assisting with cardiovascular surgical procedures.
- Skilled in tissue handling, exposure, hemostasis, and closure.
- Ability to maintain a sterile field.
- Adept at anticipating surgeon's needs.
- Competent in room turnover and surgical case flow.
- Proficient in cannulation during bypass procedures.
- Skilled in passing cannulation suture.
- Proficient in suturing as directed by surgeons.
- Strong cardiac surgical skills.
- Experience with cardiovascular surgeries.
Certifications
- BLS
- First Assist certification
- CST (Certified Surgical Technologist) OR equivalent as noted in Required Qualifications

- Adult cardiovascular surgery patients.
Unit / Specialty
- Cardiovascular Operating Room (CVOR)
- Main Operating Room (OR)
Floating / On-Call
- Must be available for call.
- May be required to float to the Main OR.
