The Pathologists' Assistant / Histology Team Lead (HTL) is responsible for the accurate examination, dissection, and gross description of surgical pathology specimens in accordance with departmental protocols, CAP accreditation standards, and established laboratory guidelines. This role supports pathology operations by ensuring high-quality specimen processing, documentation, and reporting while maintaining compliance with regulatory and quality requirements.
The ideal candidate will have extensive grossing experience in a CAP-accredited laboratory and demonstrate strong attention to detail, accuracy, and efficiency when handling a variety of specimen types.
Key Responsibilities
Perform gross examination and dissection of surgical pathology specimens in accordance with departmental protocols and laboratory standards.
Ensure accurate specimen handling, description, measurement, sectioning, and documentation.
Process a variety of specimen types, including:
Gastrointestinal (GI) biopsies
Prostate core biopsies
Breast core biopsies
Skin excisions and shave biopsies
Gynecological (GYN) specimens
Products of Conception (POC)
Other routine and complex small biopsy specimens
Maintain accuracy and consistency in grossing procedures while meeting established turnaround times.
Collaborate with pathologists and laboratory staff to ensure optimal specimen processing and diagnostic quality.
Adhere to CAP, CLIA, laboratory, and departmental quality standards.
Maintain accurate records and documentation within laboratory information systems.
Participate in quality assurance, quality improvement, and compliance initiatives.
Follow all laboratory safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
Assist with training, workflow coordination, and operational support as needed.
Required Qualifications
Associate's, Bachelor's, or higher degree in a related scientific or medical field.
Current Pathologists' Assistant (PA-ASCP) Certification required.
OR
Current Histotechnologist (HTL-ASCP) Certification with significant surgical pathology grossing experience.
Minimum 3-5 years of grossing experience in a CAP-accredited laboratory.
Strong knowledge of surgical pathology specimen handling, gross examination, and laboratory best practices.
Demonstrated ability to maintain accuracy and productivity in a high-volume laboratory environment.
Excellent organizational, communication, and documentation skills.
Ability to follow detailed protocols and maintain regulatory compliance.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working with Epic Beaker Laboratory Information System.
Experience using Dragon Voice Recognition software.
Additional experience with quality assurance and laboratory process improvement initiatives.
Previous leadership, mentoring, or team coordination experience in a pathology laboratory environment.
