Position Summary: The Phlebotomist plays a critical role in the healthcare team by providing expertise in blood draws and specimen preparation. Their ability to ensure patient comfort while collecting samples across a wide demographic is vital to delivering high-quality care to patients and meeting the needs of our healthcare partners.
Key Responsibilities:
Perform blood draws and collect specimens (e.g., urine, fecal) following established procedures.
Label specimens accurately and prepare them for processing, including centrifuging, splitting, and freezing samples as required.
Demonstrate proper techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
Fully comprehend and follow physicians' orders regarding specimen collection and testing.
Match laboratory requisition forms with specimen tubes, ensuring 100% accuracy.
Package specimens securely for transport while maintaining sample integrity by adhering to protocol-specific requirements.
Store specimens at appropriate temperatures and in proper containers to ensure their integrity for testing.
Ensure compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations by wearing appropriate PPE and following safety guidelines.
Maintain and update patient information and specimen records in the system.
Answer phone calls and address inquiries related to lab results and specimen collection.
Attend annual department trainings and stay current with procedural updates.
Perform other duties as assigned to support the laboratory and patient care team.
Qualifications:
Experience: Previous experience in blood draws, labeling, specimen preparation, and handling laboratory equipment is required.
Skills:
Strong understanding of venipuncture techniques and specimen handling procedures.
Excellent attention to detail to ensure specimen accuracy and patient safety.
Good communication skills to explain procedures to patients in a clear and courteous manner.
Compliance:
Adherence to safety and regulatory standards (OSHA, DEP).
Completion of annual department training and ongoing education as required.
