Job Summary
The Phlebotomist is responsible for performing blood draws, specimen preparation, and related tasks while ensuring patient comfort and compliance with established safety and procedural standards. 
This role is critical to delivering high-quality care and maintaining the integrity of laboratory results.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform blood draws, label specimens, and centrifuge them for processing.
  • Collect and store specimens (e.g., blood, urine, fecal) according to established procedures.
  • Clearly explain venipuncture and specimen collection processes to patients in a courteous manner.
  • Demonstrate proficiency with straight needles and butterfly needle techniques.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes, ensuring accuracy.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.
  • Verify requisitions or computer labels against scripts for 100% accuracy.
  • Package specimens securely for transport, maintaining required temperature and sample integrity.
  • Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations, including wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Record maintenance data, decontaminate equipment, and update patient information as needed.
  • Attend annual department training sessions to stay updated on procedures.
  • Respond to telephone inquiries and provide laboratory results when required.
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned to support patient care and laboratory efficiency.

Required Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, as required.
  • At least 6 months of experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to interact with diverse patient populations.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and ability to work independently.
  • Familiarity with laboratory information systems (LIS) and specimen tracking software.

Certifications
  • State-required Phlebotomy certification.
