The Phlebotomist is responsible for performing blood draws and preparing specimens with a focus on providing patients with a comfortable and professional experience.
This role requires expertise in specimen collection, labeling, storage, and processing to support high-quality care and ensure accurate laboratory results.
The ideal candidate will work with patients across diverse demographics and maintain adherence to established protocols and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Perform blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles, ensuring patient comfort and proper technique.
Collect and store specimens according to established procedures, maintaining the integrity of each sample.
Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders and protocols.
Accurately match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and check test requisitions against scripts for accuracy.
Package specimens for transport, ensuring compliance with proper storage conditions and transportation guidelines.
Explain venipuncture and other collection processes clearly and courteously to patients.
Update patient information and maintain accurate records.
Handle and decontaminate laboratory equipment while recording maintenance data.
Follow OSHA and DEP regulations and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
Attend annual department training and stay updated on lab procedures.
Respond to inquiries by answering phone calls and providing laboratory results as needed.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
Proven experience in blood draws and specimen preparation, including centrifuging and labeling.
Strong understanding of OSHA and DEP regulations.
Proficiency in handling, storing, and packaging specimens per protocol.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working with patients across a wide demographic range.
Strong organizational and multitasking skills.
Familiarity with laboratory information systems and medical requisitions.
