Job Summary:
We are seeking a skilled professional to maintain proficiency in Cardiovascular/Cardiothoracic surgery and serve as a resource for new information or changes in Cardiovascular/Cardiothoracic care. This role involves consulting and coordinating with healthcare team members to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate intraoperative patient care plans.
Key Responsibilities:
• Maintain proficiency in Cardiovascular/Cardiothoracic surgery and serve as a resource for new information or changes to Cardiovascular/Cardiothoracic care.
• Consult and coordinate with healthcare team members to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate intraoperative patient care plans.
• Consider assessment data gathered during handoff and from the patient and family to ensure completion of the plan of care.
• Prepare the CV operating room for the patient and surgical procedure. Assemble equipment, supplies, and implants, and ensure equipment is functional, supplies and implants are available.
• Demonstrate proficiency in both open and closed heart procedures.
• Understand the purpose of positioning devices and use them correctly, following policy, to protect the patient from injury and to promote optimal exposure of the surgical site.
• Actively participate in Universal Protocol and timeout, including the fire risk assessment with the surgical team prior to the start of the surgical procedure according to hospital guidelines. Complete the post-procedure pause at the conclusion of the case.
• Deliver perioperative patient and family-centered care incorporating the nursing process while providing developmentally appropriate, culturally sensitive, evidence-based care.
• Have working knowledge of cardiopulmonary bypass and ECMO to assist the team in rapid deployment.
• Follow established policy and procedures for instrument counts; initiate corrective action when instrument counts are incorrect.
• Verify medications, concentrations, and expiration dates of all medication received on the sterile field in concert with the surgical tech, surgeon, and anesthesia provider.
• Utilize outcome data at the patient level to make care decisions in preparation for and during the surgical procedure.
• Serve as the communication liaison to patients, families, and members of the operating room.
• Participate in quality improvement activities and use quality measures to understand individual and unit performance.
• Provide direct guidance and oversight of the orientee in all patient care and clinical activities and ensure those behaviors adhere to documentation standards, standards of care, and policies and procedures.
• Participate in unit shared governance initiatives to improve patient care and throughput as determined by leadership.
• Work within the scope of practice and delegate according to the Nurse Practice Act.
