Job Description:

A Cardiac Sonographer, also known as an Echocardiography Technician, is a specialized medical professional responsible for performing imaging evaluations—primarily echocardiograms—to assist physicians in diagnosing cardiovascular conditions. This role combines technical skill with patient care and requires in-depth knowledge of imaging techniques, patient positioning, and equipment operation.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Patient Evaluation & Preparation

    • Conduct both imaging and non-imaging evaluations, including echocardiography.
    • Review patient history, explain procedures, and address any concerns to ensure patient comfort and understanding.
    • Follow established pre-screening protocols and procedures for patient safety.
  2. Imaging Procedures

    • Determine and apply the appropriate imaging techniques and methodologies.
    • Arrange immobilization and support devices to ensure accurate patient positioning.
    • Prepare and position the patient for echocardiography, assisting throughout the procedure.
  3. Diagnostic Judgment & Reporting

    • Use clinical judgment to evaluate whether the images are sufficient for accurate diagnosis or if further imaging is required.
    • Provide the physician with clear images, data analysis, and relevant patient information for diagnostic interpretation.
  4. Equipment & Facility Management

    • Prepare facilities for procedures, calibrate equipment, and ensure a safe and effective working environment.
    • Monitor patient’s physical condition throughout the procedure, reporting any changes or emergencies to clinical staff or the cardiologist.
  5. Patient Monitoring & Emergency Response

    • Recognize and respond to abnormal cardiac rhythms by immediately notifying the physician or appropriate clinical staff.
    • Maintain comprehensive patient documentation, including computerized records.
  6. Administrative & Office Support

    • Assist with general office duties, including maintaining stock supplies, scheduling patients, and recording procedure codes for billing.
    • Ensure proper handling, maintenance, and care of imaging equipment to promote workplace safety and efficiency.
  7. Equipment Troubleshooting

    • Troubleshoot and document equipment malfunctions, escalating issues as needed to supervisors for resolution.
    • Maintain adequate sonographic supplies and monitor inventory.
