Job Summary
The Scrub Technologist (Surgical Technician) works under the guidance of the Registered Nurse to ensure the safety and well-being of surgical patients. This role involves preparing the operating room, assisting the surgical team with the technical aspects of procedures, and performing routine technical duties in support of surgery. The Scrub Technologist is primarily responsible for the role of the scrub person during surgeries, ensuring a sterile environment and assisting the physician with surgical tools and instruments.

Key Responsibilities
Surgical Preparation:
  • Prepare the operating room by setting up sterile drapes, instruments, and equipment as required for the procedure.
  • Ensure all surgical tools are properly sterilized and ready for use.
Assistance During Surgery:
  • Assist the physician and surgical team by passing instruments, sutures, and other items during surgery.
  • Maintain a sterile field throughout the surgical procedure and ensure patient safety and comfort.
Surgical Team Collaboration:
  • Work closely with the surgical team, including Registered Nurses and surgeons, to facilitate smooth workflow during operations.
  • Communicate effectively with the surgical team to anticipate and respond to needs during the procedure.
Post-Procedure Duties:
  • Assist with post-operative room cleaning and preparation for the next case.
  • Ensure proper disposal of surgical waste and equipment sterilization post-surgery.
Documentation & Compliance:
  • Maintain accurate records of surgical instruments used, patient information, and any other relevant data in accordance with hospital protocols.
  • Adhere to hospital and safety standards, including infection control and quality procedures.
Skills/Abilities
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills with the ability to work under pressure.
  • Ability to work with detailed, confidential material and maintain discretion.
  • Proficient in using computer systems for documentation and tracking.
  • Ability to follow directions and work precisely in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
  • Demonstrates sensitivity, maturity, and flexibility when coping with challenging or difficult situations.
Education
  • High school graduate or equivalent education required.
  • Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program.
  • Certification from an entity accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies required.
  • (Certification must be obtained within 12 months of completing the training program.)
Licensure/Certification
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required and must be maintained throughout employment.
Experience
  • 1–2 years of operating room experience preferred.
  • Experience in sterile techniques, surgical equipment handling, and assisting in surgical procedures is beneficial.
