The Registered Nurse in the outpatient setting is responsible for providing patient care, utilizing the nursing process to assess, diagnose, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing interventions. This role also involves collaborating with the healthcare team to ensure comprehensive patient care and promoting health education.
Key Responsibilities:
Utilize the nursing process to assess patient health status, determine nursing diagnoses, establish nursing goals, and develop, implement, and evaluate the nursing plan of care.
Complete POE (Point of Encounter) documentation and address care gaps during patient encounters.
Accurately document patient data, actions, interventions, and responses to treatment according to established policies and guidelines.
Assist with procedures and monitor the patient’s response during and after the procedure.
Actively participate as a member of the healthcare team to engage patients, families, and caregivers in the coordination of patient care.
Lead the nursing response to medical emergencies.
Monitor electronic messaging and emails (department InBasket) related to patient or provider requests, managing messages or triaging them to the appropriate healthcare professionals.
Initiate and monitor IV therapy, administer medications, and perform other nursing procedures as prescribed by physicians or associate practitioners.
Assess patient and family health education needs, provide health teaching and counseling, and evaluate the effectiveness of the education process.
Conduct outgoing telephone calls to patients for follow-up care and preventative outreach.
Participate in quality improvement activities and initiatives.
Engage in departmental orientation, training, and competency validation of new staff after completing validator training.
Lead departmental or regional performance improvement initiatives related to access, quality, service, and people.
Perform procedures under provider supervision, evaluating patients' responses during and after the procedure.
Serve as a preceptor, resource, and mentor for new healthcare team members and nursing students.
Provide at least one (1) training in-service annually.
Seek and complete formal continuing education relevant to the clinical discipline.
Utilize advanced skills to provide patient care, education, and consultation.
Perform procedures autonomously under physician supervision, including cardiac stress tests, RN sonography, conscious sedation, or chemotherapy infusions.
May perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice.
Previous nursing experience in an outpatient or clinical setting.
Strong clinical and patient assessment skills.
Ability to work collaboratively as part of a healthcare team.
Excellent communication and documentation skills.
Preferred Qualifications (if any):
Experience in specific outpatient procedures such as cardiac stress tests, sonography, conscious sedation, or chemotherapy infusions.
Certification in advanced nursing practice or specialty areas.
Bilingual skills (preferred but not required).
Certifications (if any):
BLS (Basic Life Support) certification required.
ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) certification preferred.
Additional relevant certifications as required by the department.
