The Phlebotomist plays a key role in serving patients by preparing specimens for laboratory testing and adhering to screening standards. This position involves drawing quality blood samples and creating an atmosphere of trust and confidence for patients during the specimen collection process. The Phlebotomist will also handle various lab procedures, ensure proper sample labeling, and maintain compliance with relevant regulations.
Collect specimens according to established procedures, explaining the process of venipuncture and other specimen collections (e.g., urine, fecal) to patients in a clear, courteous manner.
Reduce patient anxiety by maintaining a calm and comforting environment before, during, and after the collection process.
Demonstrate proficiency in using straight and butterfly needles for blood draws.
Sample Handling & Labeling:
Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes, ensuring accurate labeling and proper processing (e.g., centrifuging, splitting, freezing).
Ensure all test requisitions or computer labels are checked against physician orders to ensure 100% accuracy.
Package and store specimens according to temperature requirements, ensuring integrity for transport.
Follow procedures for specimen collection and processing according to lab protocols.
Compliance & Safety:
Understand and comply with OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) and DEP (Department of Environmental Protection) regulations.
Maintain proper decontamination protocols and equipment sanitation.
Attend annual department training sessions to stay up to date on best practices and regulatory requirements.
Customer Service & Communication:
Greet patients and customers appropriately, treating all individuals with courtesy and respect.
Answer telephone calls and provide laboratory results to satisfy patient inquiries.
Other Duties as Assigned:
Assist with additional responsibilities as required by the department.
Required Qualifications:
Minimum of 1+ year of experience as a Phlebotomist or in a similar role.
Proficiency in performing venipuncture (blood draws), specimen collection, and processing.
Knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations and safety protocols.
Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to explain procedures to patients in a clear and calming manner.
Ability to handle patients' concerns and reduce anxiety during the collection process.
Detail-oriented, with a commitment to maintaining accuracy in specimen handling, labeling, and processing.
Preferred Qualifications:
Certification in Phlebotomy (e.g., ASCP, NPA) is preferred but not required.
Experience with lab equipment and specimen transport protocols.
