The Phlebotomist provides expertise in blood draws and specimen preparation.
Their ability to put patients at ease while obtaining sufficient samples with minimal discomfort across a wide demographic is critical to delivering high-quality care for patients and partners.
Key Responsibilities
Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge samples, record maintenance data, and update patient information.
Collect and store specimens following established procedures.
Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture or other specimen collection processes to patients.
Demonstrate proper techniques using straight needles and butterfly needles.
Verify and understand all physician orders.
Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and prepare specimens (labeling, centrifuging, splitting, and freezing) as required.
Ensure 100% accuracy by checking all requisitions or computer labels against scripts.
Package specimens for transport and store them at the required temperature.
Follow procedures to maintain specimen integrity during transport.
Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and wear appropriate PPE.
Attend annual department training sessions.
Answer phone inquiries and provide laboratory results when appropriate.
Perform additional duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Proven experience in phlebotomy, including blood draws, venipunctures, and specimen handling.
Proficiency in using straight and butterfly needles and handling various color-coded tubes.
Familiarity with OSHA and DEP regulations.
Preferred Qualifications
Strong organizational and communication skills.
Experience in a healthcare or clinical laboratory setting.
