Phlebotomist - II

Position Summary:
The Phlebotomist provides expertise in blood draws and specimen preparation. They play a critical role in ensuring patients are at ease while obtaining sufficient samples with minimal discomfort. Their dedication to high-quality care is essential to supporting our patients and partners.

Principal Job Duties:
• Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data, and decontaminate as required.
• Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
• Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture (blood drawing) and other specimen collection processes (e.g., urine, fecal).
• Demonstrate proficiency using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
• Fully understand and follow physicians' orders for specimen collection.
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes, and label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required.
• Ensure accuracy by checking all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts.
• Package specimens for transport, ensuring proper storage according to required temperatures.
• Accurately label and follow protocols to maintain the integrity of the specimen during transport.
• Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations at all times.
• Wear appropriate attire and personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Attend annual department training sessions to remain updated on procedures.
• Answer telephone calls and respond to inquiries regarding laboratory results.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
• Experience in performing blood draws and specimen handling.
• Knowledge of specimen labeling, centrifugation, and proper specimen processing techniques.
• Strong communication skills to explain procedures clearly and professionally.
• Ability to understand and follow physicians' orders and laboratory requisitions.
• Familiarity with OSHA and DEP regulations and standards.
• Attention to detail to ensure accurate specimen handling and processing.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to maintain a calm, professional demeanor when interacting with patients.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
