The Registered Nurse (RN) – Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is responsible for providing comprehensive, high-quality nursing care to critically ill and medically complex patients. This role involves continuous patient assessment, implementation of individualized care plans, monitoring advanced life-support equipment, administering medications and treatments, and collaborating with interdisciplinary healthcare teams to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
The ideal candidate possesses strong clinical judgment, critical thinking skills, and the ability to perform effectively in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Care
Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care for critically ill patients in the Intensive Care Unit.
Monitor and interpret patient vital signs, cardiac rhythms, laboratory results, and other clinical indicators.
Provide direct patient care, including medication administration, intravenous therapies, and specialized treatments.
Manage patients requiring complex medical interventions, including mechanical ventilation and hemodynamic monitoring.
Respond appropriately to medical emergencies and changes in patient condition.
Clinical Monitoring & Treatment
Operate and monitor critical care equipment, including ventilators, infusion pumps, cardiac monitors, and other life-support devices.
Administer medications and treatments in accordance with physician orders and hospital policies.
Perform ongoing patient assessments and document findings accurately in the electronic medical record (EMR).
Assist with bedside procedures and emergency interventions as needed.
Collaboration & Care Coordination
Collaborate with physicians, advanced practice providers, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate patient care.
Communicate effectively with patients and their families regarding treatment plans, progress, and education.
Participate in multidisciplinary rounds and care planning discussions.
Facilitate safe patient transfers, admissions, and discharges when appropriate.
Documentation & Compliance
Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation.
Ensure compliance with hospital policies, nursing standards, regulatory requirements, and patient safety protocols.
Adhere to infection prevention and control standards.
Participate in quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.
Professional Development
Maintain current nursing knowledge and clinical competencies.
Participate in ongoing education and training programs.
Support and mentor new nursing staff and students as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Graduate of an accredited Nursing program.
Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the applicable state.
Minimum of 1-2 years of acute care nursing experience (ICU experience preferred).
Strong critical thinking, assessment, and clinical decision-making skills.
Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Proficiency with electronic medical record (EMR) systems.
Preferred Qualifications
Previous Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Critical Care, Emergency Department, or Step-Down Unit experience.
Experience with ventilator management and hemodynamic monitoring.
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
Experience in a hospital or academic medical center setting.
Certifications (If Any)
Current Registered Nurse (RN) License – Required
Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification – Required
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification – Required or Preferred
Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) Certification – Preferred
Additional specialty certifications related to critical care nursing are a plus.
