JOB SUMMARY
Assists surgeons and nursing staff in the operating room by preparing the patient, room, and surgical instrumentation for operative procedures.
Key Responsibilities
• Assists in the transportation and positioning of patients.
• Prepares the patient and operating room for planned surgical procedures.
• Assembles and dismantles tables and instruments before and after procedures.
• Opens sterile supplies and sets up for procedures.
• Completes skin preparation and draping.
• Assists surgeons with gowning and gloving.
• Assists surgeons by passing instruments and sutures.
• Maintains accurate counts of instruments, sutures, and sponges.
• Applies dressings and bandages as needed.
• Identifies, collects, and cares for specimens.
• Decontaminates instruments, supplies, and equipment according to established policies and procedures.
• Handles and stores instruments, equipment, and supplies appropriately.
• Aids in the efficient turnover of the operating room for subsequent cases.
• Monitors and restocks supplies.
Schedule / Shift
• 08:00 - 18:30, 4 days a week.
• Rotating day off throughout the week.
• On-call requirements include 1 weeknight and 2 weekend days per month.
Required Qualifications
• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Experience
• 6 months of technical experience or specialized training for non-certified roles.
• Military training or on-the-job training is acceptable, with evidence of training required.
Certifications
• Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) from NBSTSA or NCCT, or
• Non-Certified: Graduate of an OR technician program accredited through ARC/STSA, on-the-job training, military experience as a technician or LPN, dental assistant, ophthalmologist technician, or medical assistant. Evidence of training required for non-certified roles.
Skills
• Ability to assist with patient transportation and positioning.
• Proficiency in preparing operating rooms and patients for surgery.
• Skill in assembling and dismantling surgical equipment.
• Competence in sterile supply handling and setup.
• Knowledge of surgical draping and skin preparation.
• Ability to assist with instrument and suture passing.
• Accuracy in maintaining counts of surgical items.
• Capability in applying dressings and bandages.
• Familiarity with specimen handling and care.
• Knowledge of decontamination procedures for surgical instruments and equipment.
• Understanding of operating room turnover procedures.
