The Anatomic Pathology Assistant is responsible for the examination, dissection, description, and grossing of surgical pathology specimens under the direction of a pathologist. This role includes handling both simple and complex tissue specimens while ensuring compliance with laboratory protocols, quality standards, and regulatory requirements. The Pathology Assistant plays a critical role in supporting accurate and timely pathological diagnoses through specimen preparation and documentation.
Key Responsibilities
Perform gross examination, dissection, and description of simple and complex tissue specimens.
Accurately prepare and submit tissue samples for histologic processing.
Ensure proper specimen identification, handling, and documentation throughout the pathology workflow.
Assist pathologists with specimen processing and other laboratory procedures as required.
Maintain detailed and accurate records of gross findings and specimen descriptions.
Adhere to laboratory safety standards, quality assurance guidelines, and regulatory requirements.
Operate and maintain laboratory equipment and work areas in accordance with established procedures.
Collaborate with pathologists, laboratory staff, and healthcare professionals to support efficient laboratory operations.
Participate in quality improvement initiatives and maintain compliance with institutional policies.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Completion of a Master's-level Pathologists' Assistant program from an accredited institution.
Demonstrated ability to gross both simple and complex tissue specimens.
Strong knowledge of anatomic pathology principles, specimen dissection techniques, and laboratory procedures.
Excellent organizational, documentation, and communication skills.
Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced clinical laboratory environment.
Preferred Qualifications
Previous experience in a hospital, academic medical center, or reference laboratory setting.
Experience working with a wide variety of surgical pathology specimens.
Certifications
ASCP Certification as a Pathologists' Assistant (PA(ASCP)) is required.
