JOB TITLE: RN - Pre-Op
JOB SUMMARY:
Seeking a highly skilled and experienced Registered Nurse for a Pre-Op position. This role involves providing direct patient care in the pre-operative holding and Phase 2 recovery areas, ensuring patient safety and comfort before and after surgical procedures. The ideal candidate is proficient in pre-operative assessments, patient education, and managing post-anesthesia care.
Unit / Specialty:
Pre-Op Holding / Ambulatory Surgery Unit (ASU)
Schedule / Shift:
Day Shift: 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM (10-hour shifts)
Key Responsibilities:
- Assess patients admitted for surgery, including health history, vital signs, and physical condition.
- Administer pre-operative medications and IV fluids as ordered.
- Educate patients and families about the surgical procedure, pre-operative and post-operative care.
- Monitor patients closely during the immediate post-anesthesia recovery phase.
- Manage emergent situations and initiate appropriate interventions.
- Document all patient care activities accurately in the electronic medical record.
- Collaborate with physicians, anesthesiologists, surgeons, and other healthcare professionals.
- Ensure a safe and therapeutic environment for patients undergoing surgical procedures.
- Participate in the care of Phase 2 recoveries for various surgical specialties.
- Assist with outpatient infusions, EKGs, blocks, and blood transfusions as needed.
Required Qualifications:
- Minimum 1 year of current acute care Pre-Op RN hospital experience.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior experience working in a Pre-Op setting.
- Ability to contribute to pre-operative staff support.
- Prior experience with Meditech EMR system.
Certifications:
- BLS
- ACLS
Experience:
- 1 year of current acute care Pre-Op RN hospital experience.
Skills:
- Strong assessment and critical thinking skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
- Proficient in patient education and discharge planning.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- Competent in managing post-anesthesia care.
- Experience with various surgical patient populations.
EMR / Systems:
- Meditech
Patient Population:
- Patients undergoing surgical procedures across various specialties including Urology, GYN, Endo, Cath Lab, EP, CT, and general surgery.
- Patients receiving outpatient infusions, EKGs, blocks, and blood transfusions.
Floating / On-Call:
- On-call responsibilities are required, with a 30-minute response time.
- Must be available for approximately 2 ten-hour on-call shifts every 8 weeks.
Unit Information:
- Unit Description: 9 Pre-Op beds, 5 Phase 2 recovery beds.
- Patient Ratios: 1:3
- Equipment: Pyxis, GE MACVU EKG machine, Doppler, patient scale, bladder scanner.
Education: Bachelors Degree
